Saudi Arabia Implements Heat Relief Project at Jabal al-Rahmah

As millions of pilgrims prepare for the annual Hajj, Saudi Arabia has unveiled an ambitious heat relief project at Jabal al-Rahmah in Arafat. This pivotal initiative aims to safeguard the well-being of pilgrims during one of the most sacred rituals, especially given the increasingly high temperatures experienced during the pilgrimage season. The commitment to pilgrim comfort and safety is paramount.

Jabal al-Rahmah, or the Mount of Mercy, is a highly significant site where pilgrims gather to pray and seek forgiveness. Recognizing the intense heat that can impact this open area, Saudi Arabia‘s authorities have implemented comprehensive measures designed to significantly mitigate heat stress and enhance the overall pilgrim experience, ensuring a spiritually focused journey.

The project encompasses a wide range of innovative solutions. Over 1,200 square meters of shading canopies have been installed, offering much-needed respite from the scorching sun. These structures are strategically placed to provide maximum shade, creating cooler zones for pilgrims performing their rituals.

Complementing the canopies are 129 misting fans, strategically positioned to spray fine water droplets into the air, effectively lowering ambient temperatures. This combination of shade and active cooling provides immediate relief, making the environment at Jabal al-Rahmah significantly more comfortable for pilgrims.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has introduced shaded walkways and green areas around Jabal al-Rahmah. These thoughtful additions not only reduce heat absorption but also create more pleasant pathways for pilgrims navigating the area, promoting better air quality and a more serene atmosphere for reflection and prayer.

The broader heat mitigation strategy in Saudi Arabia extends beyond Jabal al-Rahmah. Recent initiatives include the deployment of ultra-reflective “white roads” in Mecca and Arafat, which are engineered to reduce surface temperatures by up to 12°C, drastically improving comfort for walking pilgrims.

Additionally, large-scale cooling systems have been activated in the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque, boasting immense refrigeration capacities to maintain optimal indoor temperatures. These state-of-the-art systems underline the Kingdom’s dedication to providing world-class facilities for worshippers.
